CLASSIC CAR SHOW & TWO DAY MARKET!

I wanted to get this post in early so you can plan your weekend accordingly!!!

Along with a two day flea market the weekend of August 2 and 3, we will be hosting a Classic Car Show on Saturday, August 2. Area car clubs have been invited to attend and hopefully the extended forecast will hold with a beautiful sunny, summer day for lookers and shoppers alike! So, if you know of someone looking to show off their pride and joy, spread the word about this great opportunity!!

Even if you don't have a beauty like this 1955 Chevy Belair Convertible, you can bring whatever you have garaged!! I think there's a little car buff in all of us just waiting to escape!! You might even get to sneak a peak at this one if she makes it to the flea! Hopefully the day will be sunny enough so she can really show off her interior and have the top down!!

We're not trying to compete with Barret Jackson here, just a fun filled day with a walk down memory lane! So get your chrome polished up and drive the short distance to Shady Hollow and share your dream with the rest of us!!
Hope to see you Saturday, August 2!!

WELCOME NEW VENDORS!

It's always exciting to see new vendors at Shady Hollow! There were several this weekend and this one happened to catch my eye!

There are several little traveling trailers like this and at first glance I thought it was one of those, but it was not!! The painted flamingos on the trailer kind of summed that up!!
Fun Victorian wares and a pink theme made this booth an especially fun stop over the weekend. "The Lavender Patch" is from Bismarck and JoAnn said this is one of her first weekends at Shady Hollow. I guess I just assumed she will be back as her antiquities were unique, fun, eye catching and affordable!
Thanks for coming to Shady Hollow JoAnn!! Hope to see you again real soon!!

CHERYL LYNN GALLERY

CHERYL LYNN GALLERY!!

There was a lot of buzz over the weekend about the new merchandise at Cheryl Lynn's so I thought I should go check it out!! Not only does she have some awesome new clothing in, but she has been busy at her work bench as well! I don't know where she finds the time and energy to get all this work done, but she does an amazing job!!
Great quality jewelry, that is sure to be collectible, at a great price!

A great new collection of dresses too!! Better hurry, these are going quick!!

DAPPER DAN!

Maybe some of you have heard of Dapper Dan, maybe not! Well, I had the pleausure of being introduced to him this weekend at Shady Hollow! He actually made his way into my shoppe! He wasn't exactly what I was thinking, with some of the movies that are out, and I think there is a rendition of Dapper Dan "hair creme" as well! I did stumble across Dressy Bessy, whom I remember, who dated Dapper Dan at some point!!!

This particular Dapper Dan was actually a child's toy, manufactured in the early 1910's by Louis Marx. The official name is Dapper Dan Coon Jigger. It is a wind up tin toy and is a dancing toy by the tin toy magnate. Excellent colorful and detailed lithography on this version of one of the many Jim Crow era Jigger toys. Lehmann, Strauss and Unique Art all had versions of this toy, the Marx is actually more uncommon. This particular Dapper Dan stands about 10 1/2 inches tall. It has a center metal rod it dances on. This is a great early tin toy from Louis Marx and from a nice addition to anyone's collection of early Marx toys.

It was nice to see in person and fun to see this highly sought after item at Shady Hollow in Detroit Lakes! It is heard this item came from an auction near the Pelican Rapids, MN area. Values on this wind up toy can be upwards of $1,500.00, because this one has the box in pristine condition as well!! Very unique!! You never know what you'll find at Shady Hollow!!!

SHADY HOLLOW TWO DAY WEEKEND!!!

Just a reminder that this weekend, July 19 and 20, is a TWO DAY WEEKEND at Shady Hollow!! The forecast at this point is good, so whether you want to set up or come out and shop, you have both Saturday and Sunday to get it done!!

With only EIGHT flea market days left, the flea market season is, well, not almost over, but going by fast!!! Plan your weekends accordingly and come out and spend them with us!!
HOPE TO SEE YOU THIS TWO DAY WEEKEND!!!

A SHADY WEEKEND!

We'd like to thank you all for coming out this past weekend! The weather turned out great for another fun weekend of bargain hunting at Shady Hollow!!

Once again I ran into some great people who were out shopping! Of note, Wayne and his granddaughter, Tegan, stopped by my shoppe to say hi while they were out shopping! They are from Pelican Rapids and had just finished off a weekend of Turkey Days and a high school reunion there! Not sure how they managed to fit in Shady Hollow, but glad they stopped in to say hi! Isn't Tegan CUTE!!!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I also caught up with Dave and Ardy's daughters while they were out buying. It was nice to see their bright smiling faces so early in the morning! I think they have been taught well and am sure they live by Ardy's motto, "sometimes a bad day at the lakes, is a good day at the market". And of course, we all know, the early bird gets the worm! Welcome back to Detroit Lakes girls!!! It's good to see Sue, Heather and Kjerstin again! Make sure you say hi if you see them wandering about the market!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I also caught up with a long time friend and co-worker, Carlos, although I'm not sure where his wife, Kelly, was. I'm sure she wasn't far behind!! You may see them scouting the flea for bargains, or just milling about. I haven't seen them with too many purchases, although I know they have made many trips to the car. Like many of us, they are much too wise to be carrying their purchases about!!! I actually saw him near this wonderful garden art, so we might have a better understanding why he wasn't carrying his purchases.....right Carlos?!!! It's always great to see you at Shady Hollow!! Thanks for coming out! But remember, no hablo espanol!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I hadn't yet met Judy, Ann Odegaard's daughter. Ann is a vendor in one of the shoppe's among the Highway 59 cabins. Judy brought some of her beautiful perennials this day, hopefully she will bring them again, as I forgot to pick up my Monarda (Bee Balm). Sorry Judy!!! Do you see any resemblance here?!!! Hope you had a great day together at Shady Hollow!! Maybe Mary can make it out one day too!!! Make sure you stop by and say hi to Ann to see what wares she has available for sale, and of course to see which daughter she has with her on a particular Sunday!!
MINNESOTA SUMMER....
While driving to Shady Hollow over the weekend, something pink and beautiful caught my eye in the ditch amongst the vast greenery. I continued to drive about a half mile and thought to myself, could those really have been Lady's Slippers?? I haven't seen a real Lady's Slipper in over ten years. I had to turn around and satisfy my wondering mind to see if it truly was. You see, the pink Lady's Slipper is the Minnesota State flower, and highly regarded and protected. They can't be picked or dug up, and it is on rare occasion that one is seen!
The ditch grass is quite tall this time of year, as we've had quite a bit of rain as well. I'm actually surprised the ditch hasn't been mowed either. Yep, that's what they were!! It was actually about 9:00 o'clock at night, and I didn't have my camera with either. In this part of Minnesota, believe it or not, it does stay daylight until almost 10:00 p.m., but it didn't leave me enough time to get home and get my camera. I was worried the night's rain would damage these delicate Orchid flowers more, so I wouldn't be able to get a much sought after picture! But, to my surprise, I awoke to a beautiful sunny Saturday!! Off I went and captured a few shots of our beautiful State Flower, the Pink Showy Lady's Slipper! Here are some facts and thanks for letting me share!!
The showy lady's slipper is Minnesota's state flower. Since 1925, the state has regulated the collection and commercial sale of this species. The showy lady's-slipper is one of 43 orchid species that grow in Minnesota. Many people consider it the most beautiful flower in the state.
The lady's slipper flowers from early June to mid-July. It flowers best in bright sunlight, although it will grow in semi-shaded areas. In its first year, this orchid grows only as tall as a pencil point. Each year, the lady's slipper may produce a half-million seeds, which are as fine as flour dust. This flower has a long life span; some may be 100 years old.
The lady's slipper grows in spruce and tamarack bogs, swamps, wet meadows, wet prairies, and cool, damp woods. It may be found anywhere in Minnesota where these habitats exist. (Well, I found these in a hot ditch along a Minnesota highway!!!)
The lady's slipper is uncommon in Minnesota. Population can be hurt by wetland drainage, road construction, tree cuttings, and illegal picking and uprooting. In addition, herbicides used on roadside areas can kill these plants. The best management is to protect the lady's-slipper's native habitat.
Fun Fact - Some people can get a rash from touching the leaves of this pretty orchid.
BIKE PARADE
Thanks Mason and Kendall for all your help in getting ready for the bike parade and coloring contest, and of course for leading us on the parade route!
Our first annual kiddie parade was a success and everyone had a wonderful time! The weather cooperated and our participants had their "floats" decorated in grand style! Thank you everyone for coming out and participating!!!
Thanks to all the vendors for cheering the parade on and partaking as well! We couldn't have done it without you!! Looking forward to a bigger and better parade next year!!
There were floats of all types, but they all showed off our patriotic spirit! Many thanks to La Ditzy for being a part of our parade as well! She certainly added some spirit of her own!
Our Shady Hollow mascot, Bruiser, (St. Bernard) even got in on the act!! Of course, he is loved wherever he goes, so the parade was held up on occasion!! After the parade I found him being hosed off at the water pit!! Not a bad idea Bruiser!!! Thanks for being a part of the parade!! Hope you got some cotton candy and treats!!
